We had a pretty messy sprint at the end of stage 3, Elia Viviani won it on the road but he did make a pretty dangerous move during the spring and the jury decided to demote him. The biggest victim of the day was Tom Dumoulin, who finished four minutes behind the winner and with a pretty nasty-looking knock on his left knee. Anyway, the sprint was reduced to just a handful of riders and in the end it was Richard Carapaz who had the most energy at the finish.

Primoz Roglic was astute and strong enough to remain with the first group, while the likes of Nibali and Yates lost 16 seconds in the general classification.

Yeah what a bad luck for Dumoulin yesterday, he doesn't look to enter the Giro on the pick of his form but still he would of been considered as one of the main favorites for the GC, hopefully he'll be OK to at least continue in the race.

Roglic looks quite impressive this season but let's see if he can handle the pressure and fatigue  off a 3 weeks race, can't wait for the mountain stages to come.

Pascal Ackermann grabbed his second stage win, he was the fastest sprinter under the rain in Terracina and he consolidated his place at the top of the points jersey classification as well.

Today's stage 12 from Cuneo to Pinerolo has the first real mountain of this year's Giro, the riders will have to go past the Montoso climb, which is 8.8km long with an average gradient of 9.5%. There will still be around 35km left from the summit of that climb until the finish, so the riders who might have problems on the ascent could make a comeback on the way down.

Ilnur Zakarin was rewarded for a brave ride today, he did very well to win the stage and he also recovered some of his gap in the general classification. Bauke Mollema and Mikel Landa also attacked and gained some time on rivals Primoz Roglic and Vincenzo Nibali, who arrived at the finish together. Simon Yates lost even more time, along with Miguel Angel Lopez, who had a mechanical problem at a very bad moment. Jan Polanc keeps the pink jersey for UAE Team Emirates for now, but he will most likely lose it by the end of the week.

We have witnessed a huge performance from Richard Carapaz today, he bravely attacked on the penultimate climb and didn't stop until the finish, always pushing on the pedals. The result? He grabbed his second stage win at this year's Giro and he will also get to wear the pink jersey for the first time in his life! Yates managed to get a few seconds back on the other favourites, while Nibali snatched four bonus seconds on Roglic and Landa.

The breakaway provided the winner on stage 15, Dario Cataldo pulled it off this time. Roglic had a pretty bad day, first he had a mechanical problem and had to swap bikes, then had a close call on a descent and eventually lost 40 seconds to Nibali and Carapaz.

I just hope Simon Yates would be back to his best in the third week which could only help for the entertainment of the race I believe, but whatever happens it's have to be an exiting 3-rd week, surely.

I didn't miss a stage so far even the boring 200km+ flat ones and I can't wait to see the rest of it.

In fact, the race organizers decided last week to take out the Gavia climb from today's route because of the high risk of avalanches through that mountain pass. However, the stage remains incredibly tough and the Mortirolo climb should do quite a bit of damage.

Yeah, I agree Johnny, with so tough mountain stages in the third week to come they've had all the chances to gain even more time.

Yeah, looking at the profile graphic I don't see this stage become much easier after the passo  Gavia removal?

It has to be a great action today and why not some huge margins being opened between the favs, plus it's just after the rest day and that's usually tricky for some off the riders, have to be great for us...not for them obviously?

Giulio Ciccone pulled off a majestic ride today, he all but secured his place in command of the mountains classification and also managed to overcome his obvious discomfort with the cold during the final descent to grab the victory at the sprint over breakaway companion Jan Hirt. Back in the favourites group, it was Vincenzo Nibali who set off the fireworks on the Mortirolo and eventually it was Primoz Roglic who paid the price, arriving alongside Simon Yates around 1 minute and 20 seconds behind Nibali and Carapaz. The Ecuadorian rider is now the big favourite for the final win, but we still have a tough mountain stage coming up on Saturday before the final time trial battle in Verona on Sunday.

Roglic looks in trouble now, Movistar has been the best unit as a team yesterday or Carapaz could of been in trouble as well.

Expected more from Yates but the race is still open I guess, surely Nibali won't be happy with the classification as it stands right now so let's see what will happen today.

The breakaway pulled off the win again, this time it was Nans Peters who was the bravest as he soloed to victory. Nibali lost a bit of time to Carapaz on the final climb, it was an off day for the Italian.

Richard Carapaz pulled off a historic achievement, he becomes the first Ecuadoran to win a Grand Tour and he will probably inspire a lot of youngsters from his nation to take up this sport. Vincenzo Nibali had a great time trial, while Roglic barely managed to grab the third place overall. As for the stage, Chad Haga grabbed the win to rescue things for the unfortunate Team Sunweb.

Yeah, Carapaz has been the most consistent rider but really Movistar dominated the race as a team helping him in some really keen moments and controlling the race as a whole, it's certainly a long awaited success for them in the grand tours and they just shown the best form as a unit.
